Deep within the mesmerizing rolling meadows, resided a young shepherd. His life was mostly untarnished, and unsophisticated. His primary duty was essentially to look after his flock of sheep.
Their soft bleating and the whispering of the wind through the solo tree on the hilltop were his constant companions. Day upon day, watching over his responsibilities instilled in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.
However, there were occasional moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would long for fellowship. In one such instance out of sheer boredom, the shepherd boy devised a mischievous scheme.
Narratives of wolves hunting on sheep had been heard times and again in the town. So, the boy decided to used this fear and played a joke on the villagers.
One morning he dashed into the village yelling “Wolf! A wolf is that has taken my sheep!” The terrified villagers ran up the hills to help but saw no wolf.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This game persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did attack the grazing sheep. The shepherd boy dashed for aid screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy battled check here against the wolf but could rescue only few of his sheep. Devastated, he returned to the town only to be met with a scolding on honesty and the results of crying wolf.
The story of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable to teaching the value of honesty, the consequences of lying and the risks of false alarms. Moreover, it highlights how trust once broken, is difficult to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was in the past.
